Serengeti Savanna Africa
The Serengeti Savanna is located in Central Africa. It is in the Tropics. They receive about 15-25 inches of rain a month. The temperatures vary between 15-25 degrees Celsius.
Serengeti's Coordinates
15 degrees North 30 degrees South 15 degrees W 40 degrees W
The Serengeti crosses 60 degrees with the equator in the middle. It's very hot and the moisture varies seasonally. There are a lot of plants and other animals and is dotted with trees. The water is plentiful during the wet season. All of these factors make this Savanna a great atmosphere for multiple animals. Everything anything could ever want is found there. Plants, animals, water, heat, flat ground, etc. So I think the abiotic factors make it very easy for various flora and fauna to find homes in the Serengeti.
ANIMALS & PLANTS
You can Find Animals such as lions, African wildcats, klipspringer, steenbok, Burchell's Zebra, puff adders, antelopes, wildebeest, buffalos, zebras, rhinoceros in the Serengeti.
Some animals are grazers, browsers, some do both.
Plants such as Umbrella Tree, baobas, jackalberry tree, whistling thorn, acacia Senegal, Wild Date Palm, Balanites, and Red Grass
Red Grass is a dominant plant species in the Serengeti. It turns red when it dies. It is a food source for wildebeest.
The whistling Thorn Tree is a tree that acts as a home for biting ants. The trees grow in areas that are very wet. The tree and the ants have a mutual relationship.
Umbrella tree is another tree found in the Seregeti Savanna. The Umbrella tree is shaped like an umbrella. The Umbrella tree however cannot survive fires so they are seldom found. Elephants eat their seeds.
Ostrich
An ostrich is an 8 feet tall bird. It can run at 60 mph. The birds feed on seeds and insects.
Lion
A lion is Africa's largest carnivore and the most common. The eat antelopes, wildebeest, and zebras.
Giraffe
The Giraffe is the tallest animal. It has a VERY long neck. They are herbivores that eat from trees with high leaves.
Elephant
The elephant is the largest land animal. It can weigh 6 tons. They long trunks and large flappy ears. Elephants are also herbivores and often eat grasses.
Plants have adapted long taproots to reach water down below. Trees have adapated
thicker bark to resist fires and hold more water.
speed, long legs,
thick
skin to make it harder for predators to bite through.
ostriches.
RELATIONSHIPS
African buffalo have with a bird. The bird was eating small bugs from his ride’s ear while the buffalo was getting rid of the pests, thus working together in a perfect symbiotic relationship.
Zebras and
Giraffes compete with each other for grasses. Both of these animals eat grasses
so they have a relationship known as competition. There is a limited amount of
grass in the Serengeti, that has to feed both animals. Both of them can't have
all of it, so they are competition. The animals have a mutual relationship with
the grass because the grass provides them with energy and nutrients and when
they die they give back the nutrients so the plant can continue to grow.
The Serengeti is also inhabited by a very special bird worth looking for the honey guide. The honey guide lives in a symbiotic relationship with the Ratel (Honey Badger) as the honey guide leads the Ratel to bee hives. The Ratel, which is immune to the bee stings, pulls down the bee hive and opens them to eat the honey. The honey guide eats the bee wax.
The Serengeti's grass is being killed faster than it can regrow by cattle grazing and fires. Poachers are killing off a lot of many causing multiple species ton become endangered.
